Centric released at CentrePort Wellington

CentricCentrePort Wellington has announced the public release of Centric, its new web-based shipping and cargo enquiry system. Centric provides an up-to-date, easy to use interface for anyone who has an interest in the movement of vessels and container, vehicle and break-bulk cargo within CentrePort.

The new system provides greater interaction with the user than the port’s previous web-reporting tools. The system has design features similar to those of standard desktop applications, giving users greater autonomy in accessing information from the port, and enabling users to customise their own enquiries.

Although much of the information provided by the application remains targeted at those with a direct interest in the movement of cargo, such as importers, exporters and shipping agents, the general public will gain access to an improved, user-friendly interface to review shipping movements within the port.

Centric was developed by CentrePort in collaboration with RIA (rich Internet application) specialist Equator. The new application received very positive feedback during its trial period, and CentrePort has now introduced it to all stakeholders.

CentrePort has created a set of screen casts to demonstrate the capabilities of the new system and to help users make the transition to the new application.

Paperless planes … it’s an exciting prospect, and the news that New Zealand could adopt IATA’s e-freight paperless air freighting by as early as this year has been widely welcomed.

By Willie van Heusden, president, Customs Brokers and FreightInevitably though, the swift implementation of the new process means all areas of our business need to be preparing now to embrace the changes and dig in for the inevitable teething stage. “Are we ready for this?” some may ask.

The answer is “yes”. The selection process is rigorous and the fact that New Zealand is among those selected for implementation in 2008/9 is a tribute to the tremendous efforts of both IATA and the industry here. IATA is working tirelessly to provide wide-reaching support to member airlines internationally to promote the widespread adoption of e-freight – including sending experts to visit Pacific Islands airlines free of charge to provide advice and training on e-ticketing. read article
