Be green with envy – the Holden Coloradoby Murray Chapman I was very impressed when the Holden people brought out the Colorado 4x4 crew cab for me to test-drive. This is a very sexy, grunty-looking vehicle and it gets a lot of envious looks as you drive by. The Colorado that I had the pleasure of testing for a week had a 3 litre diesel engine with a five-speed manual transmission. I found the five-speed gearbox very easy and smooth to use, although after driving an automatic for a long time, I sometimes forgot to check that it was out of gear before starting the vehicle! The 3 litre engine gives the Colorado plenty of grunt either around town or on a long trip, and whether trying to pass or going up a steep hill, there is plenty of acceleration there when needed. The layout of the cab is functional yet quite stylish, and all instruments and gauges are within reach and easy to read. This is a very comfortable vehicle to travel in, especially over a longer distance. The suspension while quite hard would no doubt ride a lot softer with a load in the back tray. Talking of which, the tray is spacious and deep, and while I never used it, it would hold a reasonable amount. The Colorado has a very good braking system – ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution – that gives a very stable and efficient stopping system. This is a vehicle that would be at home being used as a workhorse or for someone that also wants a vehicle to take the family out in at the weekends. I would have liked to have had the Colorado for at least a month to really have the opportunity to take it off road and to test out the 4WD selection (push button) shift on the fly. The Colorado is a very strong, sturdy vehicle that also looks great, and at a cost of $52,690 it is very good value. The Kia K2900 claims to make the work of driving easier and more enjoyable, so as the driver of a small car, it was good to put Kia’s market positioning to the test plus put the truck to good use to complete my Labour Weekend building project. The modern and rounded aerodynamic cab design that Kia has adopted for the K2900 gives the vehicle a distinctive look and immediate aesthetic appeal. As standard, the K2900’s cabin comes with air-conditioning, cloth trim, power windows, stereo and central locking, which surprised me as they resembled features I’d have expected from a quality passenger car. I immediately felt comfortable in it. |
